Readathon Oct 2013: Hours 4-6

Apart from dozing off a bit, I’m doing alright. Had some lunch, made by my fiance – yummy sandwiches and a packet of Worcester sauce crisps.
The book I am reading is For the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. It’s on the Booker Prize shortlist 2013 and is about a woman in Canada who finds a Japanese schoolgirl’s diary on the beach one day and it switches between her trying to find the girl and the story the girl, Nao, tells about her life in Japan. It is all tied up in talk of the Tsunami from March 2011 and is full of Japanese culture and language.  It is a wonderful book.

Comment: When I am not dozing off I get through a lot more! The book is a great insight into Japanese culture. I’m learning so much about Japanese nuns! I like the randomly inserted Japanese phrases. I feel for Nao. I also feel for Ruth. I don’t think I could live on a small island on the coast of Canada with storms taking away power and modern appliances during the winter! I would need my internet. I hope she finds more links to Nao and her family soon.

Book/s: A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
Paper or Kindle?: Kindle.
Pages read: 49% (6% read)
Comment: I really do love Nao’s great grandmother. She sounds wonderful. I also like the sound of life at the temple, even if it is basic and hard work. Nearly half-way through the book and a quarter of the way through the readathon. I’d better pick up the pace if I want to read any more books!

Hour 6

Book/s: A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
Paper or Kindle?: Kindle.
Pages read: 56% (7% read)
Comment: I cannot believe how fantastic this book is. It is shocking, fascinating and the characters are so real. It is weird though how long it is taking to read! I am not alone in this, as my mum-in-law-to-be is also reading this book and though we are both quick readers and are enjoying the book, for some reason our progress is slow! Both a good thing and a bad thing I suppose, as although we get to stay in the world of the book for longer, we also have to wait longer to find out what happens to Nao, her Jiko, her suicidal father and what happened with her great-uncle the suicide bomber. I now know how Ruth feels!
